HK Style French Toast

Today we are making Hongkong-style French Toast. Think of your standard fabulous French toast, except in sandwich form, stuffed with delicious peanut butter (or strawberry jam, or Nutella!), and a little condensed milk drizzled on top. It only takes 5 minutes to make, perfect for a busy morning. You’re going to love me for this one.

You can switch the peanut butter with fruit jam or Nutella, which are also popular in Cha Can Ting. For those of your who don’t know about it, Cha Can Ting is a type of HK-style Cafe restaurant, which is known for offering Chinese-Western fusion foods, mainly influenced by British culture. It is hard to simply classify Cha Can Ting as Western or Chinese because it exists as a unique cultural culinary combination.

Cha chan ting restaurants normally will deep fry the toast for a better presentation. I think it is too much oil for home cooking and if you don’t know how to control the temperature while deep frying, you will likely end up with a sponge that is soaked with oil. Pan-frying is much more friendly for beginners. Just be sure to keep an eye on it the whole time because it does get burned quickly.
